A Handbook for Communal Watershed Restoration

This field-tested handbook brings together over two decades of collaborative experience in the Upper Umzimvubu Catchment, offering practical tools for community-led restoration and governance.

Funded by the Water Research Commission (WRC), the handbook is the product of a multi-partner initiative involving Environmental & Rural Solutions (ERS), WWF South Africa, Zunckel Ecological & Environmental Services, UKZN’s SARChI Chair in Sustainable Local Histories, Rhodes University, and CONTRALESA.

It provides guidance on youth facilitation, co-management frameworks, and ecological stewardship tailored to communal landscapes. Designed for municipalities, NGOs, and local actors, the handbook supports inclusive, rights-based approaches to watershed restoration in high-altitude source zones.
